What is it?
Planetside is a MMOFPS from back in 2003. It was Battlefield on the scale of a proper MMO. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of people would fight over huge islands to control bases which contained the spawn points, item and vehicle spawners and repair points. The ultimate goal was to capture these islands and hold on to them for as long as possible before they were inevitably lost.

It was full of incredible clan operations, teamwork, cloakers blowing people up, tanks running hidden people over with lag, horrendous balance, hordes of zergling 12 year olds, mad dashes to resupply bases that came within seconds of failing, grenade spam and people crashing the servers with giant stacks of explosives. Its one of the best multiplayer FPS ever made and now they're making a sequel which is pretty much the same thing.

Planetside has three factions, the NC, the VS and the TR. Shin played NC because they were the easy mode

There's a tiny bit more info there, but sadly it sounds like the road to budgetville. It'll probably be as broken as the later versions of Planetside, but it might be fun for a while.

Possible anouncement of Planetside 2 in March next year Article here.
Nothing solid yet, but the rumours are that this is at least Planetside going free to play, if not a full anouncement of PS2
