Alright been playing through most of BF3 by now and I feel I have to write a short review for those of you who are thinking about playing it.
Multiplayer still looks like its awesome. So we're gonna play it a lot I think.
Difficulty:
Easy... too easy
Normal... too easy
Hard... weirdly it feels easy. However all the enemies will now ignore your teammates and ONLY shoot at you. Your teammates will now NOT suppress the enemy. And you often get killed by a single hit. So instead of making it challenging, it makes it a lottery.
Story:
Hollywood style. Incoherent. Inconsistent and when you think about it.. almost every chapter ends with a failure or fuckup. Nice one DICE.
Maps:
Maps are beautiful and scenic. Just dont use your brain, it will get you in trouble. They are designed to be played stringently. DO NOT DEVIATE. And follow your squadleaders orders even if its smarter not to. Cause otherwise you'll find you can't progress without having to run across the open with no supporting fire to catch up.
They are full of moronic stuff that doesn't make sense. An example would be the bank fire escape ladder. The courtyard below it is surrounded by concrete walls and has no entrance/exit... fire escape my arse. Then when you look up you realise the actual fire escape has no windows or doors leading to it... its blind... FIRE ESCAPE MY ARSE.
There is an earthquake in the story. It starts out like a normal earthquake (I have experienced it IRL) but then weirdly turns into this 2m flashflood of earth that tips a building over... irl the vertical movement is very limited, this is just hollywood special effects gone awry... Afterwards every street is torn to pieces and is several stories high. However most buildings took only light dmg. Hollywood physics at their best...
There are several situations where you are required to run into crossfire without supporting fire from your team to pull off some schwarzenegger stunt. At one point you leave a group of tanks to run towards enemies on foot in order to get a detonator... the tanks just sit there watching the enemy shoot you. Nice one DICE.
Friendlies:
You are a dog on a leash.. follow them no matter what. They are useless for most part and the directions they give are sometimes misleading.
They will get in your way in firefights and even if you play on hardcore they cant die. But the enemy will ignore them so long as they can see you.
They do not provide covering fire and have a tendency of giving you the impression its safe cause they can stand out in the open without taking hits. Don't be fooled though. If you join them you get shot instantly. Nice one DICE.
Enemies:
On hard they seem to play fairly like humans in terms of abilities with a gun. However they are 99% scripted and therefore incapable of making decisions such as not running down a corridor when bullets are flying.
They also suffer from lemmings effect a lot of the time. So at some points you figure out the waypoint the script uses and just point you gun there and wait for them to stop in your line of fire.
Close combat:
The game is full of moronic hand to hand combat. I say moronic cause any sane person holding a gun would just shoot the enemy instead. In paris I saw the enemy standing at the top of the stairs. So I shot him.. hits didnt register.. so I relocated and made sure I hit.. didnt register.. I was then told he got away by the game and mission had failed. Now that is a bit dumb.. He was cornered on an open platform and I could see him and he wasnt moving.. Stupid. I then found out you had to run to him and go through a scripted fistfight.
Speaking of scripted fistfights I might as well reveal how it works. The fights have key points in which you have to click a specific button or key or you will loose the fight. On hardcore you have .1 second to spot the msg and hit the correct key... that is faster than human reaction time.. needless to say if you play on hardcore you will fail almost all the scripted combat at first try and then have to redo them once you know which buttons it asks of you at which point. It doesn't add anything to the game other than a sort of wrestling/knife fighting "guitar hero" clone... Nice one DICE.
I can tell you I am now stuck at a point where my russian mates keep standing in the open not taking hits (but also shooting and not hitting the enemy) while I keep getting shot while in cover. They keep telling me to use the pipe for flanking however the objective marker tells me to follow them... words just dont describe how annoyed I am with this particular firefight. I don't think I will bother completing the game.
I really feel like going to DICE's HQ right now and telling them to fire everyone who worked on SP (and possibly set them on fire and spit on them to put the fire out if possible) and then tell them they are doing a great job with MP, so keep up the good work.
Overall on a scale from 0 to 100 I give it 5 points. 3 for graphics and 2 for sound.
It scores 5 out of 100!
Remember. Multiplayer is not bad at all.

It took a surprising amount of time before spud posted a picture to this thread. Personally I bought BF3 for the MP.

The graphics are pretty, and they deserve more than 3%. I'd have given more points for sound too, and how much nicer it feels to play compared to previous instalments (I played 1942 earlier, dear god, separate mouse sensitivity for everything works badly. Turn it up for tank turret response and be unable to use the hatch mounted gun because insane speed, whee!)
Who buys these games for the single player experience anymore? You want story, get an RPG or a book, FPSes are aimed at 13 year olds who couldn't understand story if it kicked their stupid underage faces in. Fucking kids ruining my games.

Yea, the SP isn't great but it's a filler till MP was available, and to just get used to the guns again. AI is retarded. Me and one other AI cleared the next room through a window. He called "CLEAR" and ran in, then stood next to an enemy.. They both ignored each other. If you don't try and move up in most of the levels, the AI will keep spawning. Even on hard you pretty much have unlimited ammo. I never noticed my main weapon drop below 400. It looks pretty and was something to play until it's official release so it did it's job. Overall playtime: 8hrs on Hard.
