While I have no idea how to play, I find formalised alliances in strategy games tend to fudge things a bit so it may well be better to leave it as informal alliances only

I also have a suggestion that we all make aliases and join the game under them (you can make up to 4 extra aliases from the main menu). I can create the game, then leave it and rejoin at a random time. This way no one will know who is who and so no presumptions can be taken about people's playstyle or skill.
Surely we will be able to figure out who is who as the game progresses but that will just add to the fun of it.
Thoughts?
Also I am for turning off alliances, they are off by default and don't really add anything.

Read that and you know 90% of what you need to. The rest you will figure out as you go along, it is not a huge disadvantage not to have played before.
